MORE

I recently spent an overdue day off with a Near & Dear One enjoying lunch in the sun. The conversation is real with this One. By that I mean, honest, open, volleyed observational antidotes of our individual lives. No gossip. No judgements. Dynamic dialogue. At a shift of topic in conversation the subject of “more” had its turn at the table.
More; an adjective defined by Merriam-Webster as 1) greater; 2) additional, further.
In the conversation, I offered I am concerned about our culture’s obsession with more.

It’s true, I wrestle with the concept; Is the motivation for more an inherent need to accumulate? Is having accumulated a measurable increased amount filling a need or satisfying a want? Is the amassed collection a defining source for outside validation? Is it a mask presenting a superficially elevated status? Sheer excess for the sake of perceived worth can get grotesque, don’t you think?
More has its place, don’t get me wrong. The sparks of desire for more can ignite the fire within fueling a motivation to grow. Set a goal. Outperform the previous attempt. Sometimes wanting more can be simply the grit in the struggle to achieve it, rather than the prize itself. More can be the next level, not simply achieving the goal, but rather maintaining the desired outcome. It is the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Wanting more to become better verses wanting more to be seen as better.
I don’t have any answers to the questions. Take a moment to ask yourself the questions. Are you comfortable with your answers? Maybe it is a matter of being mindful of what motivates us and where our intentions of our choices are rooted. I don’t know much on the topic, what I do know is there is a fine line in wanting more.
